Here it is the 50th version of the Weekly Gamefront Network News Update, the news part of the update covers the news side of the Network and the Gamefront Main site over the past week. There has been a fair bit of news from the Main site including a lot of trailers, reviews, previews and a lot more. Gamefront News: Looking Ahead: Gaming In 2012 (Q1)
By any measure, 2011 has been a huge year for gamers, and for gaming. Particularly the second half of the year, which saw the releases of Batman: Arkham City, Minecraft, Modern Warfare 3, Skyrim, Uncharted 3, Saints Row: The Third and Battlefield 3. As big as all that is, 2012 is already looking like it’s going to be bigger. In the first quarter alone, we’re getting Diablo III and the end of the Mass Effect series, and those are just the biggest names. We’re also getting the return of Counter-Strike and Crusader Kings, more unnecessary boobies, and some surprisingly decent fighting games. Really, the question isn’t what are you going to play, but on which platform? (PC, duh.)
As 2011 draws to a close, let’s take a look at what we’ll be obsessed with next year. Here’s GameFront’s look ahead to gaming in the first part of 2012.

Game Front’s resident video team had a red-letter day today when the YouTube Channel they pretty much handle on their own in exchange for modest praise and free gummy bears — it just hit 50,000 YouTube subscribers!
In celebration, James, Mitch and Zac put together the video below to answer some questions about what they each look like. That question got raised quite a bit on their last episode of The Skyrim Show, when we saw James’ in-game avatar (seen above). It’s decidedly more middle-age that James is, so the guys figured they’d throw all the subscribers a bone and let ruin whatever images they’d imagined with the real thing.
So in exchange for seeing the team in person, which, you know, ruins their deep-cover assignments in Witness Protection, you’re going to have to like, comment and subscribe to the Game Front YouTube Channel right here. In fact, you should tell a friend. It’s the least you could do.
Gamefront News: 5 Franchises That Got Beaten Like a Dead Horse in 2011
It was a year of sequels. Mostly, they were good sequels, and nice additions to their respective franchises, no matter the genre. But a few were one tired rehash too many, and in an industry that lives and dies by dishing out the same game every year, it’s getting a little tedious dishing out $60 for the same game on a 12-month cycle.
So while 2011 saw a rash of huge sequels, we want a few less in 2012. Maybe a few more fresh intellectual properties stretching their legs, or at the very least, some variety in our yearly refreshers. What follows is a list of five franchises that have gotten absolutely beaten to death — like zombies, they’ve been beaten to death, come back, and been beaten again like a horrific march of gross dead horses. So before this metaphor gets strained any further, lets get on with it — 5 Franchises That Got Beaten Like Occupy Protesters in Oakland this year:

As 2011 dwindles in its twilight and 2012 looms monolithic on the gaming horizon, we all look optimistically toward the future of video games and all the possibilities that might be opening before us in this new year. Many games have already been announced, and there are more that we’re hopeful to see.
But there is many a game that we have no chance of seeing, whether because it is just not in the cards, would be too good to be true, or is just utterly ridiculous. In light of the events of 2011, we’ve compiled a short list of ridiculous games we’d love to see released in 2012. But we’re not kidding ourselves (well, we are kidding ourselves), and we’re not holding our collective breath. Enjoy.

Ambition is probably the most notable trait of Afterfall: InSanity. The Polish, indie, third-person survival horror game wants to be huge affair. It wants to grab you and bury you in its story, thrill you with its close-range melee fights, build a world around you that can drive a franchise and make you question what’s real and what isn’t. Not all these things get accomplished, but for my experience with the game, I’ve found myself erring on the side of optimism. Afterfall could use more polish and and is at times a little undercooked, but it scores points for the effort.

It’s the end of the world. Nuclear bombs have laid waste to the world in a scenario that would make Dr. Strangelove proud. In the interim, people have been living in underground vaults called Shelters, set up by the Polish government, since the disaster happened 20 or so years earlier, and life is boring. It’s also a little dangerous, since people locked up in these underground vaults without sunlight often suffer from a form of severe cabin fever known as Confinement Syndrome. That’s where our protagonist, psychiatrist and pharmacologist Dr. Albert Tokaj, comes in. He’s the resident shrink at Glory Shelter, and he’s having some issues of his own.
Just yesterday, we told you that some database-reading folks had found references to a PC version of Alan Wake in Steam binaries. Today, Remedy has confirmed that a PC version of the psychological thriller is on the way early next year.
The PC version of the game will include both The Signal and The Writer DLC releases. Obviously, we’re expecting to see it on Steam, but there’s no sign of it on Valve’s service yet.
You might recall that the XBox Live Arcade title, Alan Wake’s American Nightmare is also releasing in this same time frame. I wonder how long it’ll take Remedy to get that one over to PC? I’d say big Steam numbers on the first game will hasten that process, don’t you think?
The official release date for Star Wars: The Old Republic is Dec. 20. But because they’re such nice guys (and for reasons that aren’t really clear), Amazon says it’s going to start shipping the game one day earlier to customers who have already ordered it, so it’ll land on Dec. 19 if you get the right shipping options.
Amazon detailed the new shipping scheme in an official release. “Because beta access ends at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time on December 19, 2011, we’ve decided to ship the game early to customers starting December 15, 2011,” the release says. So the new shipping schedule for pre-order customers is as follows:

The Internet may have just dodged a bullet this afternoon, as the house Judiciary Committee voted to delay a floor vote on the odious Stop Online Privacy Act. The decision came after a long day of debate that included disagreement over an obscure provision that would empower the Attorney General to make horrifying changes to Internet Infrastructure. After no agreement could be reached, the committee adjourned without setting a date for new debate, ensuring that passage of the bill will not happen in 2011.
While the Film and Music industries are firmly behind this terrible infringement on American Constitutional rights, the tech industry is thankfully not so stupid. Coinciding with today’s committee debate, a group of Internet engineers released an open letter to the US Congress. That letter was read into the record by Representative Darrel Issa and may have influenced the outcome of today’s proceedings.
Given the importance of the issue, and our position here at GameFront that SOPA would be absolutely terrible for the Internet, for our readers, and for gaming in general, I’m going to post the letter in full:
We, the undersigned, have played various parts in building a network called the Internet. We wrote and debugged the software; we defined the standards and protocols that talk over that network. Many of us invented parts of it. We’re just a little proud of the social and economic benefits that our project, the Internet, has brought with it.
MMO APB Reloaded seems like it has come back from the brink, with developer GamersFirst announcing the title now has more than 3 million registered users.
The game was acquired by GamersFirst after RealTime Worlds, its original creator, went out of business, and a week ago was released on Steam’s Free-to-Play service on PC. Since then, APB: Reloaded has seen some serious success, racking up a bunch of users and preparing for a retail release sometime in the near future.
According to Rahul Sandil, SVP of marketing and business development for GamersFirst, the developer saw a lot of possibilities with free-to-play through the game’s beta period. With a growing community of players and a tough MMO market to break into, the developer decided on F2P. It seems to be paying off.
It also has DLC on the way, called “Fight Club,” which will be the first add-on content the game has seen.
APB: Reloaded has been rebuilt by GamersFirst since being acquired from defunct studio RealTime Worlds, with some of the original Scottish team brought back to the project to craft and relaunch it with a freemium business model
Are you playing Star Wars: The Old Republic yet? Yeah, me neither. Apparently I’m not important enough to get early access, unlike some of my colleagues. But that’s okay, because it seems some of the best features for SW:TOR are yet to come. Or at least, hopefully coming. Planned, I guess.
BioWare ran down a big list of new features on its community forum that it’s planning to bring to the game in the future. Among them: Guild banks and Guild capital ships. That’d be pretty damn cool. There’s also a whole team working on PvP features.

* Guild Functionality – Guilds are important to the long term health of any MMORPG. We have a huge list of guild centric features. * This will be an ongoing effort that will probably never end. Guild banks are the first thing we’ll be delivering in our plans for increased guild functionality. Eventually we even want to deliver on the promise of the long hinted at “Guild Capital Ships”.
* UI customization – You like choice. We hear you! SWTOR is all about choice. Being able to choose how you interact with an online game is something we feel is very important. We are going to be giving more control over the UI as an ongoing effort. This is a very big priority for us.
Cliff Bleszinski expressed Saturday night at the VGAs the desire to continue making Gears games, but he said they wouldn’t be able to keep doing the same old thing if they did.
In the future, who knows? We would certainly love to make more experiences in the Gears universe.
I want to make sure we switch it up sufficiently so it still feels like Gears DNA, but it feels fresh and new.
He also said they’re going to keep the franchise with Microsoft until they find a better deal elsewhere, but that they probably aren’t going to find a better deal, and so there it will stay. And that’s fine.
So I would like to see a new Gears game, one in which Marcus has to wrestle with committing genocide against an entire race of people who are probably related to humans in some way in Gears 3. They were sentient beings, for Christ’s sake! Maybe my game idea wouldn’t be so terribly action packed, but it could make for a nice little RPG. “Marcus roams across the countryside looking for redemption.” Yeah.
Straight from the tweeting fingers of Infinity Ward Creative Strategist Robert Bowling comes confirmation that new content — of a sort — is making its way into Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.
“Ready for new game modes for Modern Warfare 3?,” Bowling wrote on his Twitter feed. “I’ve got some surprises for you for the weekend. I’ll confirm full details tomorrow!”
Bowling and Infinity Ward have been hinting at additional multiplayer modes coming to MW3, but we still don’t have any details as to what they’re actually planning. Apparently, we’ll have to wait for tomorrow to hear what’s actually coming, but it sounds like if you fire up MW3 this weekend, you’ll have new stuff to try out.
Here’s hoping it’ll be as inventive as the new modes that Epic Games consistently rolls out every weekend for Gears of War 3.

CD Projekt has gone on record (and still believes, apparently) that DRM only winds up hurting legitimate customers while doing nothing to prevent piracy. That’s obviously true, which is why it was unquestionably good when they took the DRM out of Witcher 2. However, in the months since doing so, as piracy has increased dramatically, they’re pissed, and they’re letting their freak flag fly.
Torrent Freak broke the news. It seems CD Projekt’s new anti priacy plan involves tracking torrent usage to identify those who appear to have illegally downloaded or shared Witcher 2, then billing the sh*t out of them. Suspected pirates, numbering in the thousands, have received letters from CDP lawyers offering them the chance to settle their ‘debt’ for stealing Witcher 2 by forking over a very reasonable €911.80, or approximately $1230.00 for those of you still using American currency.
Note, these aren’t people convicted in a court of law for piracy, they’re people CD Projekt merely suspects of having done so. To make matters worse, the trace works by looking through IP addresses which is kind of useless unless you’re using some kind of sci fi tech that hasn’t been invented, since many people can access the interwebs through a single IPA. The result: “Aside from targeting many people who indeed downloaded and shared the game without paying, CD Projekt’s lawyers are also wrongfully accusing people who have never even heard of the game.” Damn.
We weren’t entirely thrilled by Duke Nukem Forever, but we liked it ok. Maybe you felt the same? If so, then enjoy this trailer for the latest DNF DLC, “The Doctor Who Cloned Me”. Hmmmm, I wonder if the doctor is a sexist jerk?
Generals 2 isn’t the only Command & Conquer announcement we’ve got this week. EA has also announced an MMO version of the franchise which shall be known as Command & Conquer: Tiberium Alliances. This new game can be played on your phone or in your browser, and it looks, well, it looks like a Command & Conquer game. Maybe an old one, but still. Here’s a trailer.

Even though the sad news that there will be no more Orcs Must Die! DLC is still in effect, all is not lost. The final DLC pack, the Lost Adventures is being spread around like butter. It’s now available for XBLA users. For only 400 MS points, you too can enjoy new fortresses, enemies and a host of other goodies. And just to make sure there’s no confusion, here’s what you get:
Five New Fortresses – Repel the orc onslaught in four completely new fortresses plus a reverse version of The Tower where your enemies have the high ground! Each fortress can be played on Apprentice, War Mage, or Nightmare difficulty.
Two New Enemies – Fear the icy breath of the Frost Bat, and beware the draining magical attack of the Cyclops Mage!

New Additions to the War Mage’s Toolbox
Remember that speculation about a Valve ARG that started after the VGAs Saturday? If Mark Laidlaw, the writer behind the Half-Life games, is to be believed, it’s all baseless.
ValveARG.com is a site that has tracked Valve’s Alternate Reality Games in the past. With all the hoopla surrounding the video of Wheatley (watch it here) from the VGAs, the administrator of ValveARG.com decided to email Valve for more information. He got a couple of notable denials.
First, Laidlaw said, “There is no ARG at this time.” (see the email) Shortly afterwards, Gabe Newell himself made similar statement, saying, “We are not running an arg.” (see that email) Looks like there’s no ARG ongoing, folks. Sorry.
Of course, people will be quick to point out that we can’t prove that these emails are legitimate, nor can we be certain that the folks at Valve aren’t telling us a little fib. Regardless, I’ve seen enough to make me believe that Half-Life 3 is still far on the horizon, no matter how much we would wish otherwise.
Chainsaws, exploding headshots, torque bow bolts that liquefy their targets — Gears of War has always been a bloody affair, and you might have felt like a bad-ass in the past as you sliced an enemy in half or snapped a grenade onto his back and watched him run screaming before everything above the knees disappeared in a fine red mist.
But those weapons are nothing compared to some of the power wielded by the franchise’s original Big Bad, a towering Locust monster-guy called General RAAM. And the main selling point of a big new chunk of Gears of War 3 campaign DLC, RAAM’s Shadow, is that you get to play as one of the franchise’s epic final bosses.

Jeez, can you believe it’s been a decade since GTA III came out? Seriously, it’s difficult to even imagine what it was like before I played it; the only thing comparable is the effect DOOM and Quake had on everything in the 90s. But 10 years old it is, and as befits what is now hopelessly outdated software, there’s an iOS version, which sounds pretty cool. Something violent and amoral to do with my iPad!
Good news, people who use their XBLA dashboard for everything. The new interface might suck, but some new services are now available that ought to mitigate the suckiness somewhat. Like, for instance, YouTube.

Infinity Ward is rolling out some new modes and changes to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3‘s multiplayer this weekend. Detailed on its community page, the biggest change will be the addition of Community Playlists, which will feature new game modes IW and Sledgehammer will roll out every once in a while — mostly especially popular private game modes, but on a public list. It’s similar to the weekly changes Epic sends out for Gears of War 3, throwing out modes like Big Head mode and other goofy or interesting iterations.
First up is a game mode called Dropzone. Here’s the community site’s explanation of what it’ll be like:
Get to the drop zone to earn points, the first team to 7500 points wins the round, but thats not all. As long as the Drop Zone is occupied, a care package will drop every 15 seconds, which ever team has the most members in the drop zone at that point “owns” the care package, but anyone can steal it. This is the only way to earn air support in this mode, all other pointstreaks are disabled. You’ll earn 20 points per team member, for every second they’re in the drop zone plus 20 XP individually for your time spent in the zone. Kills are worth 50 XP in this mode.
The folks at Flying Wild Hog have announced that they have reached a publishing deal with Kalypso, who will be bringing Hard Reset to retail stores in March in the form of an “extended edition.” Here’s what this new version of the game will include, in addition to what is already in it.
* Five new levels (adding approximate two hours of gameplay to the original game)
* Four new enemies, one new boss character
* Updated graphics engine
* Additional gameplay elements
* New back-story
* Two new levels for survival mode
* What we don’t know is the price for this edition of the game, nor do we know if those of us who already bought the game digitally will be getting these new additions as well. I would guess that we will, and that the new stuff will be free, but I’m just guessing based on the fact that they gave us survival mode for free.
So it was exciting, kind of, to learn that Platinum Games had taken over development of Metal Gear Solid Rising. It was also exciting — or maybe more exciting, if you’re crazy — to learn that they had changed the name to Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance.
So what’s going on over there? Well, it turns out that the original team at Kojima Productions got stuck. They had made a game in which you could chop things, but they really didn’t know what to do with it after that. And so Kojima cancelled the game.
This news comes from the Hideraji podcast by way of Andriasang. The story goes then that some of the folks from Platinum came over to hang out one day, and they had some ideas. Kojima liked the ideas enough to let them revive the game.
Platinum is doing a major overhaul of the game, and they’re starting the story over from scratch, thus the ridiculous name change.
Speaking with Eurogamer, the creative director and writer on The Last of Us, Neil Druckman, said Naughty Dog is looking to “change the f–king industry” with the new game.
What does that mean?
We try so hard at Naughty Dog to push things. And then games come out that are fun and exciting and get visceral things right, but to read in reviews that they have an amazing story is disheartening to us because we work so hard at it.
As critics we need to raise the bar, otherwise no one’s going to change. We’re going to keep pushing ourselves, and kill ourselves to make this story happen — but hope that by doing it, the rest of the industry is going to take notice and try to do the same thing.
Game director Bruce Straley added this tidbit:
It’s going to be a completely amazing experience that no player has experienced for this genre, the characters, the development, everything.
I want to point out that Naughty Dog whiffed big time on Uncharted 3‘s story, but it’s important to note that these two dudes worked on Uncharted 2, which was amazing, but NOT Uncharted 3. So I’m not going to necessarily say that what happened with Uncharted 3 indicates something bad for The Last of Us. Not yet, anyway. We’ll see.
Dungeon Defenders has done pretty well for itself since it was launched a couple months ago, and the folks at Trendy Entertainment are looking to exploit that success with another heavy dose of DLC. The new DLC will consist of new campaign maps and challenge missions, along with new PvP maps. There will be four new batches, each of which will run you $3.99. Yes, that’s what I call a heavy dose.
This word comes from IGN, who says the new DLC will launch today on PC and next Wednesday on consoles. This will be the first DLC for the game on consoles, while the PC has already seen some DLC.
Today Sony unleashed a whole pile of new PS Vita trailers, and first up, because of my affinity for the franchise, is Uncharted: Golden Abyss. This trailer shows off some action as well as how to use the PS Vita’s non-traditional control scheme. Looks pretty slick.
New Yorkers were reminded of the $60 they could earn by signing up as test subjects at the Aperture Science Enrichment Center thanks to the work of some party escort submission position associates from Cal Tech.
The nerds sprang from the Cal Tech Pranksters Club, and turned a cubic sculpture titled “Alamo” in Manhattan’s Astor Place into a giant weighted companion cube from the Portal franchise Thursday. They also left a placard of information and warnings about the cube (“The Enrichment Center reminds you that the weighted companion cube will never threaten to stab you, and in fact, cannot speak. In the event that the weighted companion cube does speak, The Enrichment Center urges you to disregard its advice.”) and some information about how to effectively euthanize the cube to return the sculpture to its original (potentially more boring) state.
Yes, Alan Wake is finally coming to PC early next year, just under two years from when it made its debut on the Xbox 360. But the folks at Remedy would have liked to have had it out on that platform from the beginning. So says the company’s Oskari Hakkinen to G4.
PC gamers are very close to Remedy’s hearts from Max Payne days, even from right back to Death Rally. Death Rally first came out on PC — that was one of our first games. Max, Max 2, huge PC following.
Sure, we would have definitely liked to have brought Alan Wake out on day one for PC, but the stars weren’t aligned, unfortunately, for that. And it definitely did hurt a little bit.
That sucks, but at least they’re finally making it right, right? I mean, yeah, two years, blah blah blah, that’s not cool, but at least they’re trying, right? Right?
I’m not looking forward to Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, mainly because prequels – or in this case, prequel-ish – almost always suck. That said, I realize i’m probably alone, and many of you are planning to play. If so, here’s the latest trailer, detailing ‘Heroes Mode’. Enjoy.
Richard Garriott thinks he’s been talking to EA about Ultima. Or maybe he just thinks he thinks he’s talking to them. He told Eurogamer he has “had discussions at very high levels with Electronic Arts about access to the property,” and that “We’re in discussions with Electronic Arts even now about a possible marketing and distribution relationships and things of this nature.”
Unfortunately, EA didn’t know what he was talking about. But a spokesperson for Garriott thinks he knows what’s up (per Industry Gamers).
Richard is not CURRENTLY having conversations at high levels with Electronic Arts regarding the Ultima franchise. He never said that he is. I can assure you, however, that those conversations have taken place in the past.
What is taking place right now are conversations with EA as well as other companies regarding potential partnerships/distribution deals involving our other products including Ultimate Collector and our Casino games, Port Casino Poker and Port Casino Blackjack. These are normal and expected communications taking place as we move closer to launching Utlimate Collector sometime after the first of the year.
If you’re playing The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim on a console, I have some relatively good news for you: Patch 1.3 for the game has cleared Microsoft’s approval and is available on Xbox Live right now. On Playstation 3, the patch is still awaiting approval, but is imminent.
Meanwhile, those of us playing on PC will be happy to hear that yes, Bethesda is working on a Large Address Aware patch that will allow the game to use up to 4GB of system memory instead of getting capped at 2GB (and thus spontaneously quitting to the desktop for some players). Bethesda says in its blog that it’s testing that patch right now, with more details forthcoming soon. A previous patch for Skyrim killed a third-party LAA patch, so it’ll be nice to get that back. Bethesda says we can expect that patch next week.

Bethesda has announced today that their biggest title this year, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, has shipped 10 million copies and sold upwards of $650 million worth of units. We don’t know how many copies sold that equates to, but frankly we don’t care, because that’s a hell of a lot of money. It’s not a billion dollars, but it’s a lot. The point is that Skyrim has been extremely successful for Bethesda this holiday season.
Other fact Bethesda claims: that Skyrim outsold all other PC games three to one during the month of November. There’s probably no way to verify that, but it’s impressive if true for what it means for PC sales of the game. Basically, it means that it sold very many copies on PC. You’d think that modding may have driven that.
Yesterday, we learned that Skyrim had earned $650 million in sales. Today, we learn that Skyrim is the fastest selling title ever on Steam.
Despite the fact that Bethesda claimed that the PC version of the game outsold everything else by at least three to one in November, I still find myself surprised by this news. It’s one thing to be really popular; it’s another thing to be one of the most popular ever. And that’s what Skyrim is now, at least on the PC.
So here’s a toast to Bethesda for making a game that everyone wants to play. Good work, guys and ladies.
Whoa, look out if you have a Square Enix account. The community site for the RPG maker has apparently been compromised, and Squeenix has shut it down for the time being.
On the plus side, Square Enix says it can confirm that no credit card information was accessed in the security breach, because the server that was breached didn’t have credit card information on it. It can’t say the same for personal information, though. “We estimate that the suspension will continue for a few days until we complete our investigation and counter-measures. We will update you as we learn more.”
So there you have it. It’ll likely be a few days, Squeenix says, before the incursion is resolved. Keep an eye on Square’s forums, and in the meantime, we’ll bring you more information as it becomes available.
Good news, all you PC gamers out there. The brilliant little adventure title Stacking — a game in which you play a small stacking doll who possesses other stacking dolls by getting inside them — from Double Fine is finally coming to PC after wallowing all year on consoles exclusively. This is great news for you, because, as I said in the last sentence, Stacking is a great damn game and everyone should play it. You should want it, and sometime soon you’ll be able to have it.
The news was broken on X-Play’s Games of the Year award show in cute fashion by Tim Schafer and Lee Petty. Here’s a video of said reveal.
Well we knew it had to happen someday, that day being sometime before The Old Republic launches. And its finally arrived. Star Wars Galaxies, the venerable MMO from SOE that launched in 2003 and struggled ever since, has finally sliced off its last hand. Its shouted its last big NOOOOO. It’s blown up its last death star. What I’m trying to say is that it has been taken offline. In memoriam, Sony posted the following statement to the official site:

This is a book of memories, so let me start with a few of my own.
When I was a little boy, my father brought me to the movies to see a new science fiction film that he heard was pretty good. What I remembered most was the feeling of awe I had back then, and still feel to this day. Once I had experienced Star Wars, my life would never be the same again. In May of 2004, I walked into the office at Sony Online Entertainment to start a new job working on a game based on the very same story that had amazed me in my youth. Cool! I was very excited. All I wanted to do then was learn how this thing worked, and I spent the next seven years doing just that. I can say that not a day passed in the development of Star Wars Galaxies where I didn’t learn something new. Each day presented different challenges and solving them was always a rewarding accomplishment. It is everyone’s hope to find a job that you look forward to each and every day. Being a developer on Star Wars Galaxies was just that kind of job for me.

It’s not just the game that’s on sale; DLC for it is cheaper too, so even if you already have the game you should be able to find something you’ll like here. Unless you already bought all the DLC, too, in which case whoopteedo for you. And congrats on paying too much for things.
For the second year in a row, Valve is having an Australian Christmas in Team Fortress 2, whatever that means.
We may not understand it, but we know what they’re giving us. We’ll be getting a pair of “retro-futuristic” Dr. Grordbort class packs for the Pyro and Engineer. We’ll also be getting a bunch (14) of new hats and weapons and other items, and a new control point map called CP_Foundry.
And, of course, many items in the store will be on sale.
2011 will probably seen as a watershed moment in gaming. There were no new consoles of course, computers remained, well, computing devices, and the biggest games were all sequels. But in June, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled to overturn an odious censorship law aimed at games and in the process, bestowed them with legal recognition that they’re art. That’s a big deal, and it’s as good a reason as any to reflect on the last 50 years or so of gaming and think about the achievements that got us here.

It’s been a long year, and even longer for some of us than others. And for a year as long as 2011, we certainly had quite a few WTF moments occur in our industry. This list is just a few of them — the ones we won’t forget.

Wow, Nintendo is just failing at making their customers feel loved. First, they released the 3Ds before it was actually a finished product. Then they had the nerve to barely release anything worth playing on it. Then, to add insult to injury, they announced the addition of an attachable second analogue stick that completely makes the wonky, difficult control scheme better – proving that they released the 3DS before it was completed and still managing to stick it to their most loyal customers, AKA people like me who forked over our money for the 3DS on launch day. SIGH.
But surely, surely they’ve learned their lesson, especially after a brutal year that saw Nintendo post its first loss ever, right? Wrong. Adding injury to the insult they already added to previous injury, news comes today that the vaunted second-stick attachment that will finally make the 3DS function like a normal control scheme will go on sale exclusively at Gamestop on February 7th.
Lame. Lame. Lame lame lame. Seriously. A) I don’t want to have to stand in line for 18 hours only to counsel the employee/victims of dumbest con artists ever, B) I also hate giving GAmestop my money because they are the Dumbest Con Artists Ever
So the next edition of the DiRT franchise isn’t DiRT 4, but it might just be better than that. That is, if you don’t like DiRT and wish it were easier.
GameSpot reports that DiRT Showdown, as the new game is called, will be more of an arcade style than the other members of the franchise. Also, it will have destruction derbies, which is always really cool.

Ever since the release of The Lord of the Rings Online: Rise of Isengard expansion, we’ve been hearing bit of information about what would be included in the next update, Update 5. Recently, we got a chance to sit down and take a look at the new update through an in-game preview. Here’s what we learned.
We jumped into the game alongside Producer Aaron Campbell and Jeff Libby, who’s responsible for the game’s epic story. Turbine is adding an instance finder in this update, but Libby’s presence should give you an idea what Update 5 is really all about: story, story, story.
LotRO players have been riding the road to Isengard since the expansion released, and now they’re going to meet up with Theodred, son of Theoden. The Rangers of the Grey Company are continuing on their path to meet up with Aragorn, so the players will be taking their talents to the war against Saruman.
Upon parting from the Grey Company, you’ll receive your choice of a Grey Company or classic Ranger outfit, and then you’ll head to the Ford of Isen to lend Theodred a hand. Unfortunately for him, you’re arriving on what will turn out to be the longest day of his life, at least according to Libby.
To celebrate the upcoming full release of The Old Repbulic — and the partial pre-order access — we put together this graphic showing the four major eras of the Star Wars universe and where the franchise’s games fall into place.
The timeline isn’t to scale — view the lightsaber sidebar to understand why — but the relative positioning of sequential titles and events are accurately depicted. To keep this graphic a reasonable size, we had to cut roughly half of the Star Wars games from our list — mostly expansion packs, handheld-exclusives, educational titles, or games excessively geared toward children.
Is it just me, or is this Darksiders 2 trailer actually live action? That would be weird if it were, which is why I’m hesitant to believe it is. Either way, it’s not a terribly substantial trailer, as it doesn’t have any gameplay or anything obviously. Watch it.
At the VGAs on Saturday we got a look at Fortnite, a new game from Epic games that seems to be about… building things with garbage and fighting zombies and monsters? So it’s Minecraft? I don’t really get it. I guess we’ll find out more later. In the meantime, here’s a cinematic trailer.
Going strictly by kills per second, this trailer for Hitman: Absolution has quite a lot of murder. It’s not a long trailer, but it’s certainly full of bloody death. Also, it’s pretty stylish, as you would expect. If only the finished game would let us be this awesome.
At the VGAs on Saturday, NAMCO revealed that Tekken Tag Tournament 2 is in development, and they gave us a pretty sweet trailer in which some dudes and some ladies fight like badasses. I don’t know if the game will be any good, but I like this trailer a whole lot. Expect this one late 2012.
Dang, Battlefield 3 is good. Incredible graphics, amazing multiplayer and really, really, really realistic combat. (I admit, thankfully, that I never have been in combat, but I’ve been told it’s pretty good.) Of course, you need to stay the hell away from the silly single player campaign. Which is why it’s good that the Sharqi Peninsula DLC is multiplayer content. And it’s a map from the original Battlefield. So, win! Seriously. Unless you stop to think about the implications of yet another Middle Eastern Invasion. Then you realize this is kind of messed up. We really need to stop doing that!
That said, this DLC looks like pure awesomeness. Enjoy the trailer.
Dawn of War: Soulstorm: 0.5b1 for Soulstorm: OUT NOW
Long time no see guys.
So the Tyranid Mod is back with a new beta for you all. It's Soulstorm-only (sorry all your DCers, they're just too different for us to maintain versions for each game), includes a slew of rebalancing, a (broken, we know) test version of the new Influence resource (we have a better version on the way), a new mini-mod (Tyranid Mod: Great Devourer Mode) so you can play Tyranids without any population caps or unit hard caps, and we've even made it easier for you to access the Tyranid AI control panel so you can tweak the AI to be harder or easier at your whim.
Even better - we've already completed the major components of 0.5b2 as well, so expect to see a new version of 0.5 coming out in the next few months.
Oh, and one last thing, which I cannot stress enough:
UNINSTALL 0.45SS BEFORE INSTALLING 0.5B1
Failing to do so will prevent you from being able to use multiplayer properly with other people who have the mod and may also cause other errors we can't anticipate.
Following on from the previous Tyranid Mod updates, it turns out we messed up the module file for 0.5b1. It's using our internal testing 0.49 module file, which means the Soulstorm flag fix we put in isn't activated (Sister of Battle and Dark Eldar flags will still show up blank - a bug inherited from 0.45SS).
And yes, it's okay to overwrite the one that'll already be there with this one. That's why we're giving it to you.

Last time I promised an explanation of the two new Galactic Conquest scenarios, which will be covered at the end of this update, but first some other changes.
As many of you who follow the mod will no doubt have noticed, Beesden has redone our site and revamped the forums to bring them more in line with the mod visually, as well as make the information on the site more useful, so make sure to check those out.
As far as what's been done and what's left to do for 1.3, we've made some significant progress. The Galactic Conquest changes are mostly finished, which includes (we're pretty sure, but we could be wrong on this considering how small of a test group we have) circumventing the freezing issue in larger GCs, implementing the two new ones to be explained later, updating the starting forces (ie the Yevetha now has a couple dozen thrustships in addition to some Imperial Black Fleet ships), and a few other changes. The Au'riette and Ascendancy of the Empire of the Hand have been redone and can be seen in our gallery, and the new EotH artillery unit is almost finished. We have also fixed the bugs which limited Golan production (among other things). We've completed several maps for 1.3, including Corellia, Yag'Dhul, Abregado-Rae and Ession. All that's left is some changes to the ground portion of the mod, touching up a few skins and some other minor changes.
Moreover, as promised the optional Flak removal patch has been released due to popular demand. This is a completely optional patch which removes the "random" explosions after a ship fires. It is compatible with all existing versions of Imperial Civil War (it hasn't been tested with the FotR minimod, but it should work fine), and should work with all future versions although it will require reinstallation when you change mod versions. It can be downloaded here.

well, the winter may be wonderful, but in terms of news, UEaW doesn't seem to be this too. So first I would like to apologize for the lack of news in the last month – and for the content of this news as well.
I'm sure, "Get to the point“, you all will say now. So here the news are:
We're announcing a hiatus until next year January.
So there the bad words are. No, the words aren't „UEaW is dead“. The words are just: We're taking a deep breath, getting some distance and reevaluate our situation.
Why, you may ask now.
To be honest: UEaW isn't going on well. We have been stuck to the same point of progress for around two months now. This has a huge amount of reasons and the most of them are Real Life issues. For example, Chris is very busy with his university education and I'm very busy too, as a grade 11 student. Some exams are coming in for both of us, or are already just a few days away. However, this leads to the very unappreciated situation, that our free time is too limited to continue modding.
And far too limited when you consider, that we have a lot of other things, we have rather to do in our free time. Additional, a sort of "burn-out“-phenomenon has arrived in the team.
Your next question will probably be: Have they tricked us? Wasn't UEaW shortly before it's finishing?
Well. It was and is. In fact, we have just around 5%-10% missing – this includes a big part of the Galactic AI, the GUI, some balancing and the VA, as well as some testing and adding missing text entries of course. But if you consider the amount of time spent by working on UEaW (should be in total around 1000-2000 working hours now), the amount of 5%-10% isn't that less anymore. And it is definitely not less when the whole team is busy with education and real life.
So what is going to happen after this hiatus?
We really don't know. In the worst case, UEaW will be canceled, sadly as it is. In this case, we will release the actual version and give the rights to everyone who would like to use our stuff, who is asking and crediting us. In the best case, we will be able to continue our work and finish it soon after the winter.
In the very best case, we will get more support, who is able to do high-level coding, needed for the AI or a texture artist/modeller, who will finish the GUI and do some textures which are left (or optional).
So, these are the bad news of this month. I hope we will have better ones the next time.

The same 3D Artist who is working on this ship might be somebody who doesn't celebrate Christmas...or maybe he already got all presents he need...because somehow he found the time to throw a fundamental concept of modeling out of the window!

This release marks an end to, what I have always considered, a great Halo mod. I'm afraid I just can no longer afford the time to work on this mod since I have my own Halo mod to care for, several other projects, school and work all together. I've always enjoyed working on this mod and seeing as I still do but do feel a decline in it, I have decided to stop before I simply hate working on H:FO.
I'd like to extend an enormous thanks to Ds, who originally allowed me to come on the team, with whom I've worked very closely later on and who eventually gave me the entire mod to finish. Furthermore I'd like to thank all the people who contributed to this mod, especially HammBoyTheDestroyer who's been really busy with scripting and putting all models we've made over the years ingame. And finally I'd like to thank all the fans and followers of this mod. We've always tried to make this mod for you guys and often we've had the pleasure of hearing your opinions so we could make adjustments to make this mod even better.
I think that covers about everything. Now, I'd like to wish you all fun playing with this release and I'd also like to advise you all to check out and support the other Halo mods out there like you've done with this mod.
We begin with the grey ecumenopolis of Denon. Situated in a strategically important hyperlane intersection, this is an important world to control in many campaigns.
The landing zone at Denon offers a number of paths to the main base, and provides ample space for heavy equipment to be landed.
The long, wide streets are excellent for walkers and speeders alike. Infantry can shelter between some buildings to keep them out of the line of fire.
Altogether a nicer planet than Denon, Champala is an oceanic world, home to the Changrian species. Its rapidly changing tides meant that the native coastal cities are adapted to being partially submerged for extended periods.

Repulsorlift vehicles are recommended for attacks on Champala and all oceanic worlds, though walkers and wheeled tanks can ford some of the shallow sand banks.
The base on Champala is set on massive concrete foundations with heavy drainage pipes to keep the worst of the tides away from the main structures.
Far in the Outer Rim, New Alderaan is, as the name suggests, the homeworld of Alderaanians who escaped their planet's destruction. Much like Alderaan, it is a temperate world, though with strong seasonal variation.
A landing zone directly outside the main base, this should be held by defenders for as long as possible. It provides an excellent flaking route for attackers.
